Werner Selected for KU Global Scholars Program

As part of the inaugural class of KU Global Scholars, EECS sophomore Matthew Werner will receive a $1,000 study abroad scholarship. Fifteen sophomores were selected for their interest in international studies, plans to study abroad and potential for continued academic achievement and leadership.

Global scholars are taking an interdisciplinary honors seminar this spring. The course, “Truth in a Global Society,” explores the concept of truth from various angles and how different societies view justice, reconciliation and other principles. In addition to the seminar, scholars will conduct research on a topic related to international studies and present their research during their senior year. 

"I'm thrilled to be a part of such a selective program, and the class has been a blast so far; Dr. [Brent] Steele is great and the caliber of discussion in the class is fantastic,” said Werner, a Wichita native. “I can't wait to study abroad and immerse myself in another culture."

 “Matt is a bit of a ‘Renaissance man’, and this opportunity will help him to further expand his horizons, said Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies and EECS Professor David Petrr.

The biggest challenge for Werner will be finding the time to study abroad. He is treasurer of the KU Mock Trial team, which practices year round to compete in nationwide competitions. Werner also works as a resident assistant at Templin Hall and is part of the Self Engineering Leadership Fellows Program. Fellows take part in seminars and other professional development activities.

EECS courses are offered in universities in Australia, China (Hong Kong) Germany, Great Britain, and Korea. Shorter programs are offered over summer, winter, and spring breaks while longer programs last a semester or academic year. Students must have courses preapproved for longer programs to ensure they stay on track for graduation.
