New Undergraduate

Congratulations on your acceptance to the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at the University of Kansas!

EECS 101 - New Student Seminar

This seminar helps connect freshmen and transfer EECS students to the EECS department, their chosen profession, and each other. Topics include overviews of the various disciplines, curricula and advising, ethics and professionalism, student organizations and extracurricular activities, senior projects, and career planning.

Both of these courses will be taken in an EECS student's first year of courses.

Transfer Credits

  • Transfer Equivalency
  • Request Transcript Be Sent to KU (This will not happen unless you request it.)
  • Course Substitution Petition: used to request that a single course be substituted for a required course or count towards a degree requirement. Obtain approval before the substituted course, if possible (Course Substitution Petition).
  • Transfer Contract: used to request that a set of courses taken at another institution be substituted for required courses or count towards degree requirements (Transfer Contract Form (pdf)).

Juggling School and Work

While financial realities may require students to work, we advise they follow the “60-hour rule”. For every hour spent in class, students will spend at least two additional preparation hours outside of class. Students who exceed the 60-hour rule often struggle in the classroom.

Advising

The University has priority registration dates for continuing students. These dates correspond to the number of credit hours already completed.

  1. EECS enrollment advising occurs right after fall break and spring break each semester.
    • Two days, and only these days, are reserved for advising.
    • Announcements will be sent via e-mail and posted around Eaton Hall.
    • Sign-up for an appointment time on your advisor’s office door.
  2. Students are assigned a faculty advisor
    • Professors assist with enrollment, answer career questions, etc.
    • Students remain with their advisor until graduation
  3. Come Prepared!
    • Consult EECS Handbook to see what classes you need.  If you need to take a KU Core course, consult the KU Core site for a list of acceptable courses.
    • The Classes website shows which classes are offered and when
    • Make up a schedule
    • Look for conflicts
    • Come with questions
    • Bring an Academic Planning Form to the advising appointment.
  4. After the appointment, turn the Academic Planning Form (pdf) in to the front desk at the EECS Office (2001 Eaton) and the Engineering Advising Hold will be released.
