EECS Professor Elected Program Director of SIAM CS&E Activity Group


EECS Professor Suzanne Shontz has been elected Secretary of the SIAM Activity Group on Computational Science and Engineering for January 1, 2017 – December 31, 2018.  SIAM is the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and is a professional society that focuses on research in applied mathematics and computational science, as well as applications of the two areas.  According to the SIAM website, “The SIAM Activity Group on Computational Science and Engineering (CS&E) fosters collaboration and interaction among applied mathematicians, computer scientists, domain scientists and engineers in … theory, development, and use of computational technologies for the solution of important problems in science and engineering.”  The activity group also promotes computational simulation as an important means of scientific discovery and computational science and engineering as an academic discipline.  The SIAM CS&E Activity Group is the largest activity group and currently has over 2300 members.

One responsibility of the SIAM CS&E Activity Group is the organization of the biennial SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering.  The next SIAM CS&E Conference will be held in Atlanta, Georgia on February 27 – March 3, 2017.  As Program Director, Prof. Shontz will be responsible for the 2019 SIAM CS&E Conference and SIAM CS&E Activity Group participation in the 2018 SIAM Annual Meeting.
