EECS assistant professor Alessandro Salandrino Receives 2016 Air Force Office of Scientific Research Young Investigator (YIP) Program Award

Dr. Alessandro Salandrino, assistant professor in EECS, was  among  56 scientists selected in the US who receive the 2016 AFOSR Young Investigator Program Award.  This program is deisgned foster creative basic research in science and engineering, enhance early career development of outstanding young investigators, and increase opportunities for young investigators to recognize Air Force mission and the related challenges in science and engineering.

Salandrino will investigate the theory of Time-Varying Metamaterials. Metamaterials are a new class of artificial materials with exotic electromagnetic and optical response, such as negative index of refraction and hyperbolic dispersion.  Understanding and controlling the ultrafast temporal dynamics of such media will break new ground in applied electrodynamics, with the possibility of designing new nanophotonic devices with unprecedented functionalities.

Among  Dr. Salandrino’s research goals are the development of methods to deliver energy to high-angular-momentum states in plasmonic nanostructures by means of parametric resonances, in order to  enhance nonlinear optical interactions at the nanoscale.
