EECS Professor Elected Secretary of SIAM Computational Science and Engineering Activity Group

EECS Professor Suzanne Shontz has been elected for a one year term as the Secretary of the SIAM Activity Group on Computational Science and Engineering (CS&E).  The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics-SIAM CS&E Activity Group is the largest activity group and currently has approximately 1800 members. The SIAM CS&E Activity Group organizes the biennial SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering.  The most recent SIAM CS&E Conference was held in Salt Lake City, Utah on March 14-18, 2015.  In addition, the group maintains a wiki, a membership directory, and a mailing list.  As Secretary, Prof. Shontz is responsible for keeping a record of the affairs of the SIAG, handling SIAG correspondence, submitting a yearly report on the group’s activities, ensuring the information on the wiki is correct, and maintaining  meeting minutes.

SIAM is a professional society which focuses on research in applied mathematics and computational science, as well as applications of the two areas.  According to the SIAM website, “The SIAM Activity Group on Computational Science and Engineering (CS&E) fosters collaboration and interaction among applied mathematicians, computer scientists, domain scientists and engineers in … theory, development, and use of computational technologies for the solution of important problems in science and engineering.”  The activity group also promotes computational simulation as an important means of scientific discovery and computational science and engineering as an academic discipline.
