EECS Mourns Professor Rummer

Professor Emeritus Dale Rummer passed away this weekend. He was instrumental in helping build the Electrical Engineering Department during his nearly 50 years at KU. His passion and dedication are honored through the Rummer Award, which recognizes outstanding workmanship and innovation on senior design projects.   

“He was an engineer’s engineer― passionate about design and building. It was clear he enjoyed teaching, and students liked and respected him,” said Distinguished Professor Victor Frost, who had Dr. Rummer as a professor and worked with him as a colleague. “He was a true gentleman.”

In 1949, Dr. Rummer became an instructor in the Electrical Engineering Department. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1967 and full Professor in 1979. He retired from KU in 1994.

He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Kansas Engineering Society, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Simulation Councils, the American Society of Engineering Education, and the Association for Computing Machinery.

Research interests included embedded hardware and software design for control systems, data acquisition, signal processing, and programmable software. He served as a consultant and expert witness in these areas as well.

Dr. Rummer received his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from KU, all in electrical engineering. He earned his undergraduate degree in 1948 and began teaching the following year. He received his MS and PhD in 1954 and 1963, respectively.
