EECS Professor Elected Vice Chair of SIAM CS&E Activity Group

Suzanne ShontzEECS Professor Suzanne Shontz has been elected Vice Chair of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Activity Group on Computational Science and Engineering. Her term run from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2020. SIAM is a professional society which focuses on research in applied mathematics and computational science, as well as applications of the two areas. According to the SIAM website, “The SIAM Activity Group on Computational Science and Engineering (CS&E) fosters collaboration and interaction among applied mathematicians, computer scientists, domain scientists and engineers in … theory, development, and use of computational technologies for the solution of important problems in science and engineering.”

The activity group also promotes computational simulation as an important means of scientific discovery and computational science and engineering as an academic discipline. The SIAM CS&E Activity Group is the largest activity group and currently has over 2600 members.

One responsibility of the SIAM CS&E Activity Group is the organization of the biennial SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering. Professor. Shontz co-chaired the most recent the conference in late February.
